Bloatware: What it is — What to do about it

Some new computers and mobile devices come with extra software pre-loaded; these programs are not usually part of Windows or other operating system software. Often, they are trial or “lite” versions of professional software packages including games, productivity software, virus scanners, and the like. This software, called bloatware or crapware, has advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, they save you money. On the other hand, they can clutter your computer with programs you didn’t ask for.

Examples
Generally, bloatware programs have a useful purpose, though you personally might not need them. For example, some HP computers are sold with “Disney Fairies Hidden Treasures,” a set of online games for kids. Since many can easily live without this software, you may be better off without it. Another example is “McAfee Central,” a program that manages other McAfee security software. You may prefer the built-in security features that come with Windows, so McAfee may be another prime candidate for deletion. Toshiba include “iHeart Radio,” a streaming music service similar to Pandora and Spotify. If you already subscribe to a different service, you can deep-six iHeart Radio without regrets.

Recognizing Bloatware
Much bloatware takes the form of trial versions of software designed to tempt you into buying the full version. Trial software looks and works much like the full-blown program, but it has limitations. For example, the program might work for 30 days; after the expiration date you must pay to continue using it. Some video and image-manipulation programs stamp all images with a watermark that says “Trial Version;” to get rid of it, you must pay the vendor. More rarely, a lite version of a program will have useful functions, no expiration date, or other disadvantages, and the vendor may offer a “Pro” version stocked with extra features.

Benefits
PC makers sign deals with software vendors, who pay the manufacturers a fee to include their programs with new computers, increasing the vendors’ marketing reach. The fees help lower the price of the affected PCs, making them easier to afford. And trial software lets you test-drive programs before you commit your hard-earned cash.

Drawbacks
Bloatware consumes hard drive space. It clutters your desktop and program menus with unwanted junk. Some of these programs start automatically without your consent or knowledge, taking up your computer’s RAM memory and possibly slowing it down. Adware can be intrusive and annoying. It might also spy on your activities to glean data from you. Lastly, these programs nag the user into buying the full version, further lightening your wallet. Some poorly-designed bloatware programs create security “holes,” making it easier for hackers to break into your computer. If you feel that your laptop is slow, even from the start, you might want to consider calling us. We do computer repairs in Springfield Lakes or any other areas around Brisbane and we can remove any unwanted programs including Bloatware.

The Vendor’s Software
Many PC hardware makers include their own utility programs to manage the computer, install software, report on crashes, recover the factory default state, and perform other useful tasks. In some instances, this software duplicates features already found in Microsoft Windows, but may be easier to use. Although this is “extra” software, it is not usually considered bloatware. Unless you know what you’re doing, avoid removing the vendor’s software, as it might be essential for emergencies.

Where You See It
Bloatware primarily appears on Windows PCs, especially consumer-grade desktops and laptops meant for home use. You’ll see it much less often on professional, business-grade computers. On smartphones and tablets, the Android market has been known to go the bloatware route. At the time of publication, Apple-brand hardware (Macs & iPhones) does not include bloatware. This is part of the reason why Apple kit is pricier than some of the Windows-based competition.

Cleanup
If you’re tech-savvy, you can delete many bloatware programs yourself using the Programs and Features control panel in Windows. In addition, software companies offer cleanup programs that automatically comb through your apps, removing the junk and keeping essential programs. You may find these programs helpful in ridding your PC of excess software:
